Technical Engineer

University of Salford - Research and Knowledge Exchange

Location: Astley
Salary: £27,000 to £30,000
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 13th January 2023
Closes: 12th February 2023
Job Ref: 1304

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious graduate from an engineering, building services, or related built environment discipline to fast-track their career development as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate. The successful candidate will undertake a 27-month collaborative project between Valves Instruments Plus Ltd  (VIP) and the University of Salford.

This post is a dynamic role looking to develop and embed a new ‘Digital Design Delivery’ capability and associated staff competence to transform VIP’s business from a Tier 1 product supplier to an advanced design service provider; developing the blueprint and roll-out of a new design function, which will allow greater market exploitation and business diversification for growth.

Location: Based in Astley, Greater Manchester (M27) you will be supported by the staff from the company and an academic team from the School of Science, Engineering & Environment. In addition to working in a commercial company in close contact with other staff, the Associate will gain experience of being a key player within the growth of the business. Typically,  Associates are offered  full-time positions with the company partner on successful completion of the KTP as a permanent company employee.

The Project: The project will embed a digital transformation of VIP from a product supplier to a ‘one-stop-shop’ design service provider. This new capability will enable VIP to engage with clients further upstream at contract tender rather than at the post tender stage; a key enabler for increasing the opportunity for specifying own-brand products within new tenders, whilst creating a new design service income stream.

Additional added benefits: The successful candidate will receive extensive practical and formal training, gain highly desirable specialist business skills, broaden knowledge and expertise within an industrially relevant project, and gain valuable experience from their commercial and academic mentors. The KTP Associate will benefit from a Personal Development Budget of £4,500 and will have the opportunity to register free of charge for a postgraduate Masters or research qualification.

Skills required: A 2.1 minimum BEng or BSc in engineering, building services, or related built environment discipline. The successful candidate will be encouraged to register for a higher degree (fees waived) if appropriate.

Knowledge/expertise: Digital information management and delivery procurement requirements (e.g. EN BS ISO19650) and/or building services (i.e. pipe stress analysis).

The successful candidate should possess excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated and have the ability to work independently and to tight deadlines within a dynamic team environment.
