About the team/job

Our team develops and maintains Europe PMC - an open access repository of 8.1 million full-text biomedical research articles, supplemented with 41 million abstracts, database links and citation information which is supported by 37 international biomedical funders.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to an ambitious project that aims to become the literature resource of choice for life science and biomedical researchers in the UK, Europe and beyond.

The successful candidate will work together with the rest of the team (Developers, UX Architect, Product Manager, Team Leader, Community manager, Help Desk and content experts) in an Agile environment and will need to collaborate with other internal teams and external collaborators. 

Your role

In this role you will:

  • Develop new features in EuropePMC APIs and Data exports
  • Maintenance - bug fixing
  • Monitoring services and troubleshooting
  • Responsible for deploying applications to Kubernetes cluster using the CI/CD pipelines 

You have

  • A degree or higher degree in web development, computer science or equivalent experience
  • Experience of working on a large-scale system in terms of data and high user traffic
  • Experience in:
    • Java technologies (Spring, Hibernate, JDBC, etc.
    • Tomcat, Apache Web Server
    • Linux – Shell scripting
    • SQL, PL/SQL
    • Oracle/MongoDB/Postgres
    • Docker and docker-compose
    • Kubernetes
    • Helm charts
    • SOAP/RESTful Web Services and XML/JSON data
    • testing code and managing deployments to the live environment (Gitlab/Jenkins)
    • Application performance tuning and problem diagnosis
    • Using version control systems (Git/Gitlab) and issue tracking software (JIRA/Gitlab)

It is not essential to have a scientific background 

You might also have

  • Cloud Experience ( GCP or AWS)
  • Experience in javascript technologies (ex: NodeJS)
