About the team/job
EMBL is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to join Dr. Jan Korbel's group in the Genome Biology Unit. The Korbel group combines computational and experimental approaches, including in single cells, to unravel determinants and consequences of germline and somatic genetic variation. We are looking for scientists with a largely computational, and possibly hybrid (experimental and computational) background, to work on spatially-resolved omics analysis relating to the 3D topological distribution of transcriptomes and their underlying mutational makeup in three different types of cancer – colorectal cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer. This post will be funded by the SATURN3 consortium, a German Decade against Cancer flagship project in which the Korbel group plays a leading role. The post holder will join an interdisciplinary team that uses and develops cutting edge methods in spatial and time-resolved genomics, and will be responsible for the computational analyses of datasets in an inspiring lab atmosphere as well as an environment in which unique technologies are being developed. Prior experience in single-cell, spatial, and/or imaging data analysis will be a huge plus for candidate post holders.
Your role
You will lead and contribute to research projects of the Korbel group, specifically in (but not limited to) spatially-resolved analysis of transcriptomic data to explore patterns of colocalization, co-occurrence, or mutual exclusivity across cellular states and cell-types from the tumour microenvironment from primary tumorous tissues. Specific roles can comprise methods development aspects as well as the application of existing methods to obtain novel biological insights into the tumour 3D ecosystem from exciting patient cohort datasets.
You have
Applicants should have a PhD in the biological sciences, cancer genomics, computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, physics or a related field, and proven research experience in a relevant field. The ideal candidate is motivated to work in an international team on interdisciplinary projects and enjoys working in a highly collaborative atmosphere while being able to work independently and to set and meet deadlines. Applicants should have strong communication and interpersonal skills. Fluency in English is essential.
You might also have
- Experience in cancer genomics, multi-omics, spatial omics methods - Experience in NGS and imaging data analysis
Why join us
The Korbel group is a ‘hybrid’ laboratory in which computational biologists and experimentalists collaborate tightly to obtain new insights into human disease and molecular mechanisms. The group is using bulk as well as single cell-based and spatial omics approaches for investigating mechanisms behind complex phenotypes in humans, ranging from common diseases including cancer to ageing.
What else you need to know
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.. You will be involved in many ongoing cutting-edge projects and activities and will collaborate with experts from the scientific community and have the possibility to acquire new state-of-the-art skills. We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1900 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome. EMBL is a signatory of DORA. Find out how we implement best practices in research assessment in our recruitment processes here.
