University Biomedical Services (UBS) are looking to recruit for the position of Animal Theatre Technician to support the care of on-site large animals undergoing surgical procedures within a busy farm facility based in North Cambridge.
The role will have primary responsibility for the daily operation of on-site surgical facilities; coordinating the use of resources; maintenance of rooms and equipment; providing pre-operative and post-operative care; completing regulated, non-regulated, and surgical procedures; whilst providing technical support and advice to ensure best practice and the adherence of asepsis. This will include daily care and husbandry routines for large farm animals in the facility, with specific care for animals undergoing surgery.
You will complete necessary administrative processes required for the operation of the facility and surgical areas, including ordering and maintenance of supplies, cost recovery, procedural and animal records keeping records to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
You will assist the Centre Manager / NACWO with daily supervision of Animal Technician staff, providing supervision, training and assistance with animal care, husbandry and procedural tasks. You will also provide supervision and training to surgically trained Animal Technicians who also assist in the operation of the surgical facilities.
We are looking for an individual with animal care experience working in either general or referral veterinary practice or a designated animal facility with demonstrable knowledge and experience of aseptic surgical techniques and procedures, including suturing and large animal anaesthesia. Experience working with large farm animals would also be an advantage. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to use computers for record-keeping and train others. You will be self-motivated and able to organise your workload effectively, prioritising tasks where necessary to efficiently complete duties under pressure and with limited supervision. Knowledge about GLP guidelines, the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and other associated legislation would also be advantageous.
You will have a good standard of general education, although an RCVS Veterinary Nursing Qualification and / or Home Office Personal Licence (modules A-C) would be desirable.
The role is available immediately and is subject to a 6-month probationary period.
