The University of Huddersfield is seeking an ambitious and talented synthetic chemist to spearhead a new research program on sustainable photofunctional molecular materials. Photochemistry and photocatalysis is an area of growing importance in the current chemical sciences with the photosensitiser used often being a metal complex incorporating 4d or 5d transition metal elements such as ruthenium of iridium. These elements, whilst well suited to their role, are however amongst the rarest elements in the Earth’s crust. The development of novel photosensitization based on lighter and more abundant 3d transition metal ions to compete with and replace those based on their heavier cousins is imperative, represents a significant and important challenge and is a current hot topic in modern chemistry research.
The successful candidate will carry out synthetic work toward novel photosensitiser complexes of metal ions from the first transition series and be engaged in the time-resolved study of their excited state dynamics. Experience of organic and inorganic synthesis, including inert atmosphere manipulations (Schlenk line, glovebox), is essential. Experience of photophysical characterisation and familiarity with time-resolved spectroscopic techniques is desirable. The work involves international collaboration with researchers in Sweden and France with potential for short secondments.
Informal enquiries should be addressed to Professor Paul Elliott (p.i.elliott@hud.ac.uk)
