Aim: To investigate and develop an approach for bridge health monitoring and its inclusion in risk-based asset management modelling
Currently assessment of the health state of bridges is commonly carried out through visual inspections, which can be subjective and infrequent. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques offer an alternative with the potential for continuous, real-time monitoring that could lead to improved assessments of failure risk and better-informed asset management decisions. To date, available monitoring methods are not developed as a part of a holistic approach to support exploratory inspections and sensor data is not incorporated in asset management.
The aim of this project is to develop a framework to identify the bridge health state using objective measurements obtained from an easy-to-deploy, portable, sensor-based monitoring system, which will complement the existing visual inspection approach. This proposed framework will then use the sensor data to support bridge asset management decisions, based on the prognosis of the bridge health state obtained. It is envisaged that longer term such monitoring approaches will supersede visual inspections of bridges. Wider impact is expected through future applications to different types of railway bridges, as well as road bridges.

Entry Requirements: Starting October 2023, we require an enthusiastic graduate with a 1st class degree in engineering, computer science, maths, or a relevant discipline, at integrated Master’s level or with a relevant MSc (in exceptional circumstances a 2:1 degree can be considered).
