Structural Biology brings molecules to life in 3D so that we can unpick how they form, work, and interact. It has led to many new insights into how different molecules in the human body keep us healthy, and prompted new disease treatments that modify malfunctioning molecules, such as Tamiflu used to treat influenza, and numerous structure-based drugs that combat HIV. The Rosalind Franklin Institute’s ‘Structural Biology theme aims to remove this bottleneck by revolutionising how molecule samples are produced, stabilised, delivered and transferred.
The Role
The Rosalind Franklin Institute (the Franklin) is a National Research Centre, funded by the UK government through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology. The Electrifying Science grants from the Welcome Trust and the Amplus project funded by EPSRC both aim to develop new instrumentation for life science. In addition to state-of-the-art instruments, the institute houses and develops new technology, and the focus of this role is to disseminate these applications and developments via training and publication. The Franklin is working closely with microscope manufacturers (i.e., Thermofisher Scientific Jeol), national facilities (i.e., CCP-EM, eBiC) and houses an internal Artificial Intelligence and Informatics theme. The Franklin is seeking to recruit two Electron Microscopy Application experts (one cryo-FIB/SEM and one cryo-ET) within the Structural Biology theme of Rosalind Franklin Institute. Your role will be to enable the use of the state-of-the-art microscopy instrumentation as we as newly developed approaches for image acquisition and/or post-processing analysis for either cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) or dual beam FIB/SEM. As an application expert, we expect the candidate to work closely with the development teams (hardware & software, industry and in-house) to provide user requirements/ specifications and feedback throughout the development cycle.
Your primary task will be to utilize either the dual-beam FIB/SEM or TEM in the most efficient, up-to-date manner for data collection, ensuring an optimal workflow is implemented. You will also be responsible for training users. You will work closely with the instrument managers and scientist leads, to maintain up-to-date protocols and safety information and be an active member in the development of the workflow. Finally, you will disseminate the newly developed techniques and/or protocols via publication, internal communication and/or conferences.
