Anniversary Fellowships

University of Southampton

Bring your research to the world stage and make a difference

From revolutionising the rail infrastructure and improving the lives of people affected by dementia, to gaining a deeper understanding of culture and creativity, research at the University of Southampton addresses some of the most challenging issues facing society today.

Now, in its second year the University of Southampton is inviting applications to join our flagship Anniversary Fellowship scheme.

The University is committed to employing a diverse workforce and building an inclusive culture. The Anniversary Fellowship scheme is key to supporting us achieving this vision by attracting researchers from around the world from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life whose common goal is to achieve the remarkable and build an inclusive world.

About you

Bringing your own unique vision of how to make a difference to society, you’ll help to shape the future of research, both at the University and in your own field. Over three years of protected research time, you’ll have the opportunity to tackle adventurous and novel research challenges. Mentoring, peer support, training and networking opportunities will be available throughout, and we will help you to access external research funding. We will encourage you to work across disciplines and connect with external partners.

Our Anniversary Fellows will support and inspire each other, driving forward innovation on an international platform. You will hold a PhD and will be on the way to demonstrate potential for research excellence in your field. Highly organised and motivated, you will demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills, and will also have exemplary powers of communication, alongside a collaborative and inclusive approach.

What we can offer you

  • a world-class research environment
  • three-year independent research funding
  • additional funding for research expenses
  • access to mentoring, career development and networking across the University and beyond
  • support to successfully apply for a permanent academic post, subject to performance

We aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.

We welcome applications from all aspiring Fellows. We especially welcome applications from people who identify with one or more of the following: Black, Asian, a minority ethnic background, coming from a lower socio-economic background, LGBTQ+, a woman or having a disability as these identities are currently under represented in our senior academic community.

As part of our commitment to supporting our research community we are open to flexible working. We give full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly including part-time and those who have taken a career break. Proud to be a founding signatory of the Athena Swan gender equality charter we hold an institutional Silver award which recognises our work in supporting the advancement of gender equality. We also are proud to recently have been awarded the Race quality Charter Bronze award, where we have been commended for our commitment to improve race equality across the University community.

As well as our generous holiday allowance and additional university closure days, we will help you find a good work-life balance and endeavour to be as flexible as possible to consider individual requirements and circumstances. We will support your long-term future too, with access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS)*, subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts.

These posts are offered on 3-year fixed term contracts. We will support Fellows to develop their skills and it is intended that Fellows will be successful in securing a permanent post at the end of the Fellowship. Part-time appointments will be considered on a pro-rata basis.
