Laboratory Officer/Research Technician

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

About the team/job

EMBL is Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome. Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.

We are searching for a Laboratory Officer/Research Technician to join the group of Dr. Thomas Quail in the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit at EMBL Heidelberg, Germany. Our interdisciplinary, curiosity-driven group uses a combination of biochemistry, cell biology, quantitative microscopy, single-molecule biophysics, and Xenopus egg extracts to dissect the physical and biochemical principles driving genome self-organization. We are searching for a highly motivated applicant who would establish and maintain the DNA engineering, protein purification and biophysical characterization methods in the lab, would play a central role in setting up the research group, and who would make original scientific contributions to the research projects of the lab.

Your role

The successful applicant will take part in research projects involving biochemistry, protein purification, biophysical characterization methods, single-molecule biophysics, and cell biology techniques, alone and in collaboration with other lab members. A willingness and enthusiasm to train researchers from diverse academic backgrounds in an array of techniques is a must. The candidate will also be responsible for general laboratory management, including administration of lab resources and purchasing.

You have

  • A Masters or Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell Biology or a related field.
  • Experience working in a lab and research environment.
  • Biochemical expertise—cloning, protein purification, biophysical characterization.
  • Curiosity-driven approach to solving complex questions in biology.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong interest in training students and post-doctoral fellows from diverse scientific backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

You might also have

  • Prior experience with single-molecule biophysical techniques.
  • Prior experience with antibody production.
  • Prior experience with extract-based or lysate-based cell biological systems.

Why join us

EMBL is curiosity-driven, community-oriented and international. As an inclusive, equal opportunity employer, we believe that diversity enables us to collaborate more effectively and be innovative in our approaches. We are, therefore, committed to creating an inclusive and flexible culture - one where everyone can realise their full potential and make a positive contribution to our organisation.

We encourage applications from individuals who can complement our existing team – we believe that success is built on having teams whose backgrounds and personal experiences reflect the diversity of the populations that our science serves. We actively encourage applications from all genders and cultures, ethnic groups and all demographics to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights at this transformational point in our people strategy.

EMBL offers attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family-friendly working environment. Competitive salary and social security benefits, financial support for relocation, a relaxed culture, professional development, an on-site nursery, canteen and other staff facilities make EMBL a great place to work.
