Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges.

About the Role:

We are seeking a Senior Software Developer/Software Developer (dependent upon skills and experience) to join the Human Genetics Informatics (HGI) team at the Wellcome Sanger Institute for a permanent contract. We support, run, and provide efficient access to cutting-edge analysis methods to all the Human Genetics faculty groups at the Sanger Institute.

This is a great opportunity to work on a wide range of leading technologies in a world-class scientific institution. Our team works with High performance Compute on the Sanger farm (several thousand cores managed by LSF) and in both on-premise and public cloud environments (e.g. Openstack and Google Cloud Platform). We handle large data scales (up to tens of thousands of samples in varied informatics datasets). We routinely use tools such as Docker, Singularity, Github/Gitlab CI, Terraform/Ansible, Nextflow/Cromwell and web development frameworks.

You will be responsible for:

Our ability to run pipelines and deliver data is critically dependent on

  • Accounting and managing the storage and compute usage for the department’s scientific projects, using reporting interfaces and active data management services.

Deploying and managing resources in the cloud, including the Google Cloud platform and the OpenStack on-premise cloud. This includes

  • Provisioning and administering a GCP-based Trusted Research Environment on behalf of WSI and external collaborators.

  • Provisioning / troubleshooting Spark clusters and many other apps in OpenStack with an Infrastructure-as-code philosophy.

You will be initially focused on the first area, with the expectation that you will eventually get experience in all aspects of our work.

About You:
You will be expected to be able to work both independently and closely with colleagues to develop, and to be comfortable communicating directly with scientific researchers as needed. Graduates or students in your final year are also encouraged to apply, although it is strongly desirable that you have substantial development experience outside of coursework (e.g. work experience, participation in open source projects or the pursuit of personal coding projects). Bioinformatic/biological knowledge is not essential for this role, but an interest in the science on campus and desire to learn bioinformatic concepts would be an advantage.
