PhD Studentship in Geometric Analysis and Machine Learning

PhD studentship in the Analysis and PDEs Research Group in Mathematics

Type of award: Postgraduate Research

PhD project

A fully funded PhD studentship in Geometric Analysis and Calculus of Variations with applications to Machine Learning is available with a start date of September 2023. The successful candidate will be working under the supervision of Professor Ali Taheri and will join his team in the Analysis and PDEs group in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Sussex.

The proposed project entails a systematic study of sharp geometric and functional inequalities on suitable function spaces on manifolds and graphs (with particular emphasis on Lie groups and symmetric spaces) and aims to develop and further enhance techniques from metric geometry and geometric flows, by utilising entropy monotonicity arguments, Wasserstein spaces and gradient flows as well as kernel methods, optimisation on spaces of manifold-valued maps (as well as topological data sets). Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project a particular emphasis and view will be towards applications in machine learning and the geometry of deep learning.

The selected candidate will be a highly ambitious and devoted student with a strong background and qualification in any of the above or related areas (including PDEs, Harmonic Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Topology, and Mathematics of Machine Learning).

For details about the position or any other informal enquiries, please contact Professor Ali Taheri at: a.taheri@sussex.ac.uk

Amount

  • Fully-paid tuition fees for three and a half years at the home fee status.
  • A tax-free bursary for living costs for three and a half years (£17,668 per annum in 2022/23).
  • Additional financial support is provided to cover short-term and long-term travel.
  • If you are not a UK national, nor an EU national with UK settled/pre-settled
status, you will need to apply for a student study visa before admission.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a first-class degree (or non-UK equivalent qualification) in Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related area. Having a or else a relevant Master's degree is advantageous.

This award is open to UK and International students.

Deadline

Applications should be received by Monday 21 March 2023. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in April.
