The School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield is a research-intensive environment and home to many world-leading research groups including Electron Microscopy and Materials Analysis (EMMA). In EMMA, we specialise in radiation damage in materials including for nuclear applications, semiconductors technologies and extraterrestrial environments. Our principal experimental facility is the Microscope and Ion Accelerators for Materials Investigations (MIAMI-2) instrument which combines a transmission electron microscope (TEM) with dual ion-beamlines allowing in-situ observation of the dynamic evolution of radiation damage in materials on the nanoscale.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Assistant to provide support to our large numbers of projects. The duties of the successful applicant will include the following:

  • To support the group in the design and execution of experiments including using the MIAMI-2 facility.
  • To prepare of TEM samples including using focussed ion beam (FIB) milling.
  • To design and development of scientific equipment as part of the group.
  • To assemble and maintain scientific equipment including TEMs, ion beamlines and vacuum systems including liaising with manufacturers and suppliers.
  • To provide practical training and support to PhD students and new members of staff.
  • To perform routine TEM operation including sample screening.
  • To conduct and update literature and database searches.
  • To collect, process and analyse and help interpret data.
  • To help maintain the laboratory working environment including the ordering of consumables.
  • To assist in the preparation and production of research reports and documents.
  • To participate in group meetings and committees, as appropriate.
  • To undertake other duties directed by the Research Leader and other senior members of the group.
  • To complete training and administrative tasks as required by the University.
  • To ensure the implementation of the University’s policies and regulations within the remit of the postholder’s duties.
  • To register, if required, for a research award.

For a suitably motivated appointee, there will also be opportunities to be more-actively involved in our research projects both internally and with our international network of collaborators. We will also support the successful applicant in the development of their career by facilitating the pursuit of their own research interests and development of research funding bids (for example, for a fellowships or EPSRC New Investigator award) with the understanding that any additional activities must not cause conflict with the fulfilment of the core responsibilities of the role.

We offer an excellent employment package including hybrid working, blending a mix of remote and on-campus working (dependent on work duties).

If you wish to discuss this opportunity further with the EMMA research group, please e-mail: miami@hud.ac.uk
