Hours: Full Time

About the project:

Ta‘lim is an international programme in religious, moral and cultural education for Ismaili children at the primary level. Its overall aim is to educate children in the faith, ethics, history and cultures of Muslim peoples and of the Ismaili community in particular. Based on this framework, it seeks to promote self-development, learning and moral responsibility through instructional approaches which encourage creativity and reflection.

The Ta‘lim programme is based on a planned curriculum, drawing on modern principles of education. It is presented in eleven languages through a series of teaching and learning materials, designed to meet the needs of Ismaili children, parents and teachers living in different countries and cultures. The curriculum has been in use since the 1990s, and the next phase of refinement and upgrading is being planned.

The position:

The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) in London, UK, seeks to recruit a Primary Curriculum Officer to assist with its Primary Education project in the Department of Curriculum Studies (DCS). This is a full-time, three-year fixed term contract position, based at the Aga Khan Centre in London.

Under the supervision of the ECD and Primary Curriculum Coordinator, the Curriculum Officer will focus on the key roles of curriculum planning and development at the primary level, the production of teaching and learning materials, and the refinement of the content and pedagogy in the current curriculum. The input provided into the educational development of children aged between 6-12 years will also feed into teacher training and development and the effective use of digital media in the instructional process.

The requirements:

The prospective candidate will have a postgraduate qualification in Education, teaching experience with the 6-12 years age group, and be familiar with the IIS’s Primary Ta‘lim Curriculum. They will have relevant expertise in curriculum planning and development, applying an interactive teaching and learning pedagogy, including some level of engagement with the use of digital technology and media in educational programmes. Knowledge of developing parental support programmes and professional development of primary voluntary teachers is essential, as is the ability to manage multiple priorities, and engage with the cultural sensitivities and challenges of developing an RE curriculum for a diverse global context.
