The Korzelius Laboratory, within the School of Biosciences is seeking a skilled Research Technician to join the technical team in supporting the work carried out in the laboratory.

The Korzelius lab at University of Kent was recently awarded an AMS/Wellcome Trust Springboard Award to tackle how entero-endocrine cells in the intestine differentiate, and how the differentiation of these cells is affected with age (Korzelius et al., 2019 Nature Communications, Tauc et al., 2021 Elife). In this project, we will use both the fruit fly intestine as well as human intestinal organoids to identify novel regulators of entero-endocrine differentiation. This project will allow you to use your skills working with both flies and 3D-organoid culture as well as building skills in genetics, molecular biology and image analysis.

Working as part of a technical support team providing a comprehensive, immediate and specialised support service for staff and students within the Division, the role of Research Technician helps to deliver timely and effective specialised research and teaching support to students, academic and research staff at all levels and visitors to the Division. Reflecting a higher ability and skill level, a Research Technician works autonomously and solves complex problems. You will have a good understanding of Health and Safety protocols and procedures and will ensure a safe working environment is maintained at all times. This role will support the effective and efficient operation of general facilities and resources having day to day oversight of both availability and service levels.

As a Research Technician your duties will include:

  • Work on own initiative and with minimal supervision. Use a well-developed working technical knowledge to help solve problems independently, maintaining the working environment and raising any complex issues with more senior staff
  • Working with insect culture (Drosophila melanogaster) and cultured human organoids
  • Operate complex technical equipment, assisting staff and students. Undertake routine maintenance tasks, fault finding and basic repairs.
  • Role holder uses both theoretical knowledge and practical experience to provide advice and support in a technical or specialised field.

The successful candidate will have/be:

  • Experience with tissue micro-dissection and dissociation protocols
  • Proven experience of working in a Technical support role
  • Educated to A level or equivalent
  • Relevant theoretical knowledge in a related work area
  • Experience using complex technical equipment
  • Excellent working knowledge of safety regulations and procedures. For example, risk assessment, COSHH
