Research Fellow

University of Southampton - Institute of Sound & Vibration Research

Location: Southampton
Salary: £33,314 to £40,931 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 31st January 2023
Closes: 27th February 2023
Job Ref: 2160223DA

You will  join the Signal Processing, Audio and Hearing Research Group of the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and work as part of a vibrant and supportive team working on Intelligent Structures for Low Noise Environments. Within this role you will focus on the development of novel  strategies for the control of fluid-borne and structure-borne noise and vibration in pipeline networks, but there will also be opportunities to collaborate within the team on a broad range of topics related to noise and vibration control.

Pipelines occur in many industrial applications, from the oil and gas industry to the aerospace, civil and maritime sectors. Whilst acting as an effective means of transporting fluids, they also detrimentally serve as an effective means of transmitting noise and vibration that can then be radiated as noise from the pipeline and cause an unwanted disturbance. Within this role you will investigate through both numerical simulations and experimental studies various novel active and passive approaches to controlling both structure-borne and fluid-borne noise and vibration. The considered strategies will include both passive acoustic and vibrational metamaterials and non-intrusive active control technologies.

You should have experience and/or interest in acoustics, vibration, control or signal processing. The specific focus of the research will be tailored to your skills, but will certainly benefit from the extensive experimental facilities available at the ISVR and provide an opportunity to develop new skills within a supportive environment.  It is essential you have a PhD (or will achieve within six months) or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Mechanical or Acoustical engineering and/or signal processing and /or control or related area.

You will join the world-renowned Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, which has a strong legacy of research leadership within the field of sound and vibration internationally. Engineering at Southampton was ranked 4th in the UK in terms of research power in the latest REF and the environment for supporting research and enabling impact was judged to be 100% world leading or internationally excellent.
