The Faculty of Science and Engineering wish to appoint a Senior Technician to provide teaching and research support for the School of Engineering Computing and Mathematics.

You will work as part of a team under the direction of the School Technical Manager and deliver support in all aspects of Manufacturing & Rapid Prototyping, manage a laboratory and workshop areas.  You will have particular responsibility for laser cutting and 3D printing.  You will need to demonstrate the relevant skills, a suitable amount of work experience and a commitment to the technical delivery/technical education within the technical team.

You will be expected to have a HND or Degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent or extensive experience in the subject. Must have practical knowledge and experience in manufacturing and rapid prototyping with a particular focus on laser cutting and 3D printing.  The following skills and experience are desirable: use of SolidWorks, experience with Lightburn or similar laser cutting software, general maintenance of 3D printers and laser cutters, be able to work with people of differing levels of ability i.e., students and researchers

You must be able to work within a team covering many subject areas and to be proactive in covering all aspect of activities in a professional manner.

You will be required to support a broad range of activities which includes undergraduate projects, teaching, research and outreach activities.  A key element of the role will be the day-to-day operation of the DigiFab laboratory, and you will be involved with developing the facility as we prepare to move into our new Engineering Design Facility in Summer 2023.

The University of Plymouth is looking to reinforce its reputation as an innovative centre of excellence for engineering research, teaching and learning.  The new Engineering and Design facility (NEDF) being constructed on the western edge of the main Plymouth campus will provide a new home for the specialist laboratories and teaching facilities of the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics and the School of Art, Design and Architecture.

NEDF integrates a fully refurbished Babbage Building with a new-build, wrap-around area to create more than 10,000m² of research laboratories and teaching spaces. New, state-of-the-art resources are planned that will enable engineering teaching and research to underpin the fourth industrial revolution and complement existing equipment.  The new building and its physical resources will inspire the development of new inter-disciplinary activities in teaching, learning and research, and nurture the innovative graduate engineers demanded by future society.

The School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics is the home of our Mechanical, Marine, Electrical, Electronic, and Robotics Engineering subject disciplines, which together with Civil and Coastal Engineering, Navigation, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, provides a vibrant inter-disciplinary and collaborative environment, dedicated towards producing pioneering research but also graduates, with the necessary applied knowledge and skills to meet the demands of employers today and tomorrow.

This is a fixed term contract working 37 hours per week and is fixed term to cover a period of maternity leave which is anticipated to be for approximately 9 months.
