Department
The Department of Biology at the University of York is looking to appoint a new Lecturer in Ecology. We are looking for candidates who are able to demonstrate a capability and vision to deliver an exciting independent research programme focusing on ecology and biodiversity and a commitment to excellence in University-level education. The successful candidate will join our supportive Department, and add value to our broad-ranging research portfolio.
We are seeking an outstanding scientist whose interests complement and deepen existing strengths and expertise across the Department and University, including through interdisciplinary working across the Science Faculty and beyond. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with a vision to apply expertise in ecology to the major global challenges we face; for example, through exploring the interactions between climate change, biodiversity and land use in the context of sustainable (net zero) agriculture, and/or aiming to understand the impact of climate change on biodiversity and human health.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with our successful research centres including the Leverhulme Centre for Anthropocene Biodiversity (LCAB), the York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI) , the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP), and the York Biomedical Research Institute (YBRI).
The Department of Biology runs highly successful taught programmes in Biology and specialist areas including Ecology. We expect the successful candidate will engage enthusiastically to deliver and help develop our taught portfolio. The Department has a diverse graduate student body with PhD programmes funded by BBSRC, MRC, and NERC and we expect the successful candidate to successfully maintain a research group of graduate students, technical and post-doctoral staff.
The position will be based in the Department of Biology with access to our world-class Bioscience Technology Facility containing state-of-the-art technologies and support for -omics, imaging and data analysis. The University of York is proud to be a top 10 UK University for Research according to REF2021.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
You will have a PhD or equivalent experience, a successful post-doctoral career with an excellent publication record, and evidence of the potential to drive an internationally competitive research programme. You will have the capacity to display initiative and judgement in designing, developing and delivering high quality teaching and learning support across a range of modules. This post is available full time (part-time working will be considered) on an open contract with starting salary in range £42,155 to £51,805. Your application should include a cover letter outlining how your recruitment would fit with, and enhance, our existing strengths in research and teaching.
