Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in History with an emphasis on Gender in the School of Humanities (History) (Ref.: 519131), to commence on August 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.
The Department of History has established strengths in Chinese, East and South Asian, British imperial and Russian history as well as in thematic histories with an inter-disciplinary orientation such as social and cultural history, environmental history, legal history, gender, heritage and urban history. We are seeking applicants that can complement these strengths. The Department is known for its collective engagement with methodologies and approaches foregrounding international, and transnational perspectives, and histories of connections between Asia and other parts of the world. The Department offers a very popular Major and also makes a significant contribution to general education through the University’s Common Core Curriculum.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent by the date of appointment. They should be able to demonstrate a passion for research and a commitment to the development of an innovative research-led teaching profile. We especially welcome applicants with expertise in gender, imperial history, and the engagement of the U.S. with the wider world. The successful candidate is expected to develop an excellent research profile, to excel in undergraduate teaching, postgraduate supervision and to participate in the administration of the Department. The University and the Hong Kong Research Grants Council provide substantial competitive funding for research projects of many kinds. Teaching Development Grants are also available to assist with the development of innovative undergraduate courses. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
