The University of Roehampton seeking a Director of Sustainable Engineering to lead the strategic development of a brand new academic unit, the Sustainable Engineering and Technology Education Centre. The Centre will provide industry-leading facilities and will be home to a suite of high-quality and industry-engaged programmes in engineering, architecture and built environment, at higher technical, apprenticeship and degree level. It will also be a major asset for South London, providing opportunities for research, innovation and corporate engagement. This initiative will build on the University’s strong and growing reputation for education, research and knowledge exchange across its STEM portfolio.
This is an opportunity to lead an initiative, which will be central to the future of the University and will contribute to the UK’s strategic journey to achieve net-zero by 2050. The University is making a significant capital investment in a new facility which will be home to the Centre, and the new Director will play a central role in its development. Initially reporting to the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and External Engagement), the new Director will lead the academic development of a sustainable engineering portfolio for the University. They will establish the Centre, as a new academic unit, and will be responsible for strategic leadership and operational management. They will also be responsible for: overseeing programme development; recruiting academics and students; delivering a high-quality education and outstanding student experience; and growing industry-engaged research and knowledge exchange. The new Director will be a high-profile advocate for the new Centre internally as well as externally, including with local government, industry and community partners.
Candidates will probably have a background in civil engineering or built environment disciplines. They could come from a wide range of professional or educational backgrounds. They must demonstrate excellent leadership qualities, both strategic and practical, with a can-do attitude and significant management experience. They must be superb relationship-builders, able to collaborate with senior academic leaders and staff across the university, and to engage effectively with accrediting bodies, FE partners and industry. They must bring ambition, energy and bold vision to the role.
The University of Roehampton is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion. The University particularly welcomes applications from women, people from black and minority ethnic communities, the LGBT+ community and from disabled people.
