Postdoctoral Research Associate

The University of Edinburgh - College of Science and Engineering / School of Physics and Astronomy / Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics / Particle Physics Theory

Location: Edinburgh
Salary: £35,333 to £42,155 Per Annum, UE07
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 3rd February 2023
Closes: 13th March 2023
Job Ref: 6443

Fixed Term Contract - 2 Years, must start by 1st June 2023; Full Time - 35 Hours Per Week.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics, School of Physics and Astronomy, to work on worldline approaches to strong field problems in gauge theories.

The Opportunity:

This position will contribute to the EPSRC Grants EP/X02413X/1 and EP/X024199/1, “Fresh perspectives for QED in intense backgrounds: first quantised techniques in strong field QED,” held by Anton Ilderton (Edinburgh) and James P. Edwards (Plymouth).

Research activities will focus on the behaviour and properties of QED and Yang Mills theories in extreme environments, generated by strong background fields. Exploiting and extending recently developed worldline techniques for strong field QED, the calculation of higher loop and higher multiplicity scattering amplitudes in gauge theories will be a central part of the project, with the aim of investigating non-perturbative effects and the resummation of perturbation theory. The PDRA will work with Anton Ilderton and collaborators at Edinburgh, as well as James P. Edwards and the SFQED group at Plymouth, with whom this grant is shared.

Note: this is a 24 month position and must start by 1st June 2023. The position is based in Edinburgh.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • PhD (or near completion) in Physics, Theoretical Physics or Mathematical Physics.
  • Experience in the worldline approach to quantum field theory, or in strong field QED.
  • Proven track record of delivering research results in an academic context (Peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations etc).
  • Drive and capability to work independently, exercising a high degree of initiative and demonstrating a proactive and flexible approach to work.
  • Prior postdoctoral experience is desirable but not essential.
