The UK Data Archive (UKDA) is an academic Department of the University of Essex, based in the world leading Faculty of Social Sciences. We are the only University in the UK with Economics, Politics and International Studies, Sociology and Languages and Linguistics ranked in the top 10 for research quality (GPA) and research power, with many of our Social Science subjects ranked in the top 100 in the world. The UKDA is home to the UK’s largest digital collection of social sciences and population research data. The UKDA has a number of central relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders and collaborators. External stakeholders include UKRI and national statistics bodies such as ONS, UKSA, among others. Collaborators include Jisc, CMI, Edina and other organisations involved in the field both within the UK and internationally, such as the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives and the DDI Alliance.
This appointment aims to allow the UKDA to create links with other departments and increase the university’s capacity in information related studies in order to fully exploit the rich resource that the UKDA offers. The successful candidate will spearhead the exploitation and use of this rich and complex data set into the wider university community. This senior appointment will make significant contributions to future leadership within the UKDA, contributing to further embedding its operations within the wider university context.
The post holder will also be expected to draw on the digital data assets of the UKDA by offering some bespoke postgraduate modules/CPD and offer PhD supervision. The University is a national centre of excellence in data acquisition and management and we expect you to develop strong links with the Institute of Social and Economic Research (co-located in the same building), the Institute of Analytics and Data Science, and Institute of Public Health and Well-being.
