This new full time post is available immediately on a 12 month fixed term basis. This role offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on campus and some from home.

Summary of the role

The Centre for Additive Layer Manufacturing (CALM) wishes to recruit either a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow to support the industrial partnership of CALM and Victrex plc (https://www.victrex.com/en/news/2018/09/victrex-am-exeter-cooperation).

The collaboration is looking to develop the next generation of high performance polymers (PAEKs), for additive manufacturing processes, for tomorrow’s applications.

The partnership is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to work in the AM area with high performance thermoplastics and composites, within the growing CALM team at the University of Exeter. The position requires close engagement with the Victrex Application AM team, working on a variety of specific applications ranging from medical to aero or energy.

This post is available immediately for a period of one year, with potential for extension beyond this period (subject to approval). The successful applicant will be developing skills in powder bed processes, filament extrusion and other new AM technologies suitable for PAEK polymers. Applicants must have knowledge of materials science, specifically thermoplastics and they are expected to have a good theoretical and practical knowledge of Additive Manufacturing. Training will be provided where necessary. In addition, the candidate should be confident using standard material characterisation equipment (thermal, mechanical testing equipment).

Through the capital investment of this partnership, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to work on the newest technologies available in high temperature AM and be at the forefront of the high performance polymeric AM developments. Victrex plc is a world leader in high performance aromatic polyketones with increased activities in manufacturing, offering cutting edge material solutions, streamlined production facilities and application development expertise.

As part of their duties, the successful candidate will present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally and in writing within the partnership team.

Applicants can possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion for PDRA) or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively. The successful candidate should have a practical approach to work built on a good theoretical knowledge, be proactive, enthusiastic and able to self-manage in order to carry out the necessary characterisation, processing, testing and analysis duties.
