A Research Assistant (RA) position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in Prof. John Connelly’s group to work on “Biophysical regulation of nucleolar structure and function in senescent cells”, a multi-disciplinary project in collaboration with Prof. Cleo Bishop (QMUL) and funded by the BBSRC. The RA will work collaboratively with a team of scientists investigating the role of nucleoli in cellular senescence and the functional impact on metabolism and tissue ageing. The RA will be responsible for the generation and maintenance of engineered cell lines, cultivation of 3D skin culture models, and histological analysis, alongside general laboratory support and maintenance.
The successful candidate should have a BSc or MSc in biomedical sciences, biology, biochemistry, or a related life sciences degree. They should have sound experience in cell and molecular biology including mammalian cell culture, cell line generation, qPCR, and histological methods. Knowledge of cellular senescence, ageing, or skin biology is highly advantageous. The RA will also prepare high-quality data for publication and help train undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The Blizard Institute was established in 2003 and is one of six Institutes within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, QMUL. The Institute comprises approximately 350 staff based in four academic Centres and one Public Engagement Centre, and supports a combined total of c750 postgraduate research and taught students. The Institute aims to deliver excellence in all aspects of research, teaching and clinical service.

The post is based at the Whitechapel Campus in London. It is full time (35 hours per week), fixed term appointment for 3 years, with an expected start date of April 2023. The starting salary will be Grade 3, £30,396 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.
