Masters Research Studentships in the Environmental Sciences subject community

The Environmental Sciences subject community (representing the Geography & Environmental Studies Unit of Assessment) at the University of Gloucestershire are offering a limited number of studentships for MSc by Research. The topics advertised span the Applied Ecology & Biology, Environmental Change, and Social Vulnerability research groups. The studentship covers 12-month tuition fees for a UK/Home student, fieldwork and incidental costs and a £1500 student stipend.

The following projects are available starting on either 01 October 2023 or 01 February 2024:

Project: Evaluating the flood memory and resilience of flood prone communities
Lead Supervisor: Dr Lucy Clarke (LClarke@glos.ac.uk)
Other supervisors: Prof Chris Short, Dr Rachel Bennett, Karen Andrews (Environment Agency)

Project: Evaluating the role of in-channel Natural Flood Management interventions in habitat improvement and creation for Lamprey species.
Lead Supervisor: Dr Lucy Clarke (LClarke@glos.ac.uk)
Other supervisors: Dr Daniel Stones, Dr Laura Weldon (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust)
Specific requirements: This project will involve fieldwork and so a drivers’ license  would be advantageous.

Project: Advancing the understanding of landscape modelling in forensic palynology
Lead Supervisor:Dr Julia Webb (JWebb@glos.ac.uk)
Specific requirements: An aptitude for independent laboratory work (after appropriate training). 

Project: Why are Welsh Puffins booming? A ‘groovy’ citizen science project
Lead Supervisor: Dr Matt Wood (MJWood@glos.ac.uk)
Other supervisors: Prof Anne Goodenough

Set in the attractive surrounds of Cheltenham, students will be based at the Francis Close Hall Campus of the University in the School of Natural, Social & Sports Sciences (www.glos.ac.uk/sciences). We welcome informal enquiries to the lead supervisors named above.

Applicants should hold at least a 2.1 from an undergraduate degree in Geography, Bioscience, Ecology, Environmental Science or related discipline. The studentships are competitive; shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview and following these the Studentship Panel will compare applications across all of the projects and make the award on the basis of their assessment.

Please note that not all projects will be funded, and the funded studentships do not cover full maintenance costs and are only available to UK students or those with home status with regard to fees.

  • a CV - maximum 2 pages detailing your education/employment history, skills and experience;
  • a cover letter - maximum 2 pages explaining how your skills and experience fit to the specified project and wider suitability for postgraduate study;
  • 2 academic references (at least one from your dissertation supervisor) – these should be completed on university letter-head or branded paper, contain full contact information for the referee and in this your referee should outline your academic record and suitability to complete postgraduate study and the project you are applying for.

Closing date: 13.00pm Monday 24th April 2023

Interview date: week commencing 8th May 2023
