An opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Reader in Social Care or Social Work to make a major contribution to education, research, knowledge exchange, academic leadership and teaching within our Faculty of Health and Education. The successful postholder will also take up the role of Deputy Head of Department, Social Care and Social Work. The Deputy Head of School role is a senior academic management role. The role holder will provide academic leadership in relation to social care and social work. They will work closely with the Head of Department and other senior colleagues across the University. Located in the Department of Social Care and Social Work, the successful applicant will be expected to play an important role directly through their education leadership and knowledge of social work and social care within the Department.
The Deputy Head of Department role occupies an 80% workload allocation: it is expected that the Deputy Head of Department will maintain an academic research profile in their field over the duration of the appointment and have an annual 20% allocation of workload for that purpose. Following completion of the initial term, the Deputy Head of Department is expected to return to a substantive Reader post in the department.
About the role:
We were inspected in 2022 by Social Work England and all social work programmes were approved with no conditions. We are an ambitious department for both students and staff. Further information about the Department of Social Care and Social Work can be found here.
Applicants will also be expected to contribute towards research and education in the Department, which offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Social Work, Integrated Health and Social Care, and we deliver Degree Apprenticeships programmes. Applicants will have a background in an area of social work or social care and experience of working in Higher Education.

*Please note that this is a Grade 10 Reader with this additional 4 year responsibility which attracts an honorarium to bring the salary to the top of G11. At the end of the 4 year rotation the individual will either be extended for 4 years or return to the G10 role (and the honorarium will cease).
In addition, this role is paid at Grade 10, with an uplift to Grade 11 (£65,578) for the Deputy Head tenure. Until 31/07/23 an additional 2% discretionary recognition payment will be paid (£66,890).*
