Job Purpose

BBSRC International stimulates collaborations in science and technology to advance the UK’s global reputation and influence. This is done through engaging and investing in key strategic bilateral and multilateral international relationships to strengthen bioscience research and innovation, working with both research-intensive and low- and middle-income countries.

Main Responsibilities

The Senior Portfolio Manager-International will provide programme management and oversight primarily for ODA activities alongside other international work within BBSRC, working alongside other Senior Portfolio Managers in International. Some responsibilities include:

  • Coordination of ODA programmes within UKRI-BBSRC (and assisting on non-ODA programmes as needed), facilitating cross-UKRI-BBSRC and cross-UKRI working.
  • Be the key point of contact for enquiries and engagement within BBSRC, cross UKRI and externally including briefing materials on activities
  • Engage with key stakeholders and work with senior leaders in UKRI-BBSRC and international counterparts to maintain current and establish new strategic partnerships
  • Work with colleagues across BBSRC and the wider science community to provide evidence and analysis for BBSRC ODA activities in order to develop strategy and identify future challenges where UKRI-BBSRC engagement and investments can best contribute to serve our strategic objectives
  • Lead the formal reporting on related ODA activities, including quarterly and annual reporting to BEIS and FCDO
  • Provide inputs on the evidence and analysis for the effective monitoring, evaluation and reporting of current UKRI-BBSRC international investments.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Degree or equivalent in a biological or related subject and/or previous relevant experience and genuine interest in the aims and objectives of BBSRC.(S/I)
  • An understanding of UK Aid strategy, the contribution of research to overseas development and Official Development Assistance (ODA)(S/I)
  • A demonstrable ability to work with and influence internal and external stakeholders at all organisational levels (S/I)
  • Be responsible for planning and prioritising own work area and the work of others. Contribute to wider team activities and priorities as required (S/I)
  • Strong liaison, networking and negotiation skills. Anticipate stakeholder reactions and communication needs (S/I)
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills, including the ability to present complex information concisely under tight deadlines (S/I)
  • Willingness to travel in UK and abroad, including occasional overnight (or longer) absences (I)

Desirable:

  • Masters Degree or PhD in a biological or related subject and/or previous relevant experience(S)
  • Experience of international development research programme management and working with relevant stakeholders in both the UK and overseas(S/I)
  • Experience in science strategy or policy development (S/I)
  • Knowledge of the UK Research Council system, research community and peer review process (S/I)
