Professor or Assistant Professor of Fundamental Rights

Hertie School - Centre for Fundamental Rights

The Hertie School is recruiting a Professor of Fundamental Rights. We are looking for a candidate with an active research, outreach and teaching agenda on contemporary and emerging challenges to the protection of fundamental rights in domestic, regional or global law and governance. The successful candidate will contribute to research and outreach at the Centre for Fundamental Rights, and will offer courses to the international and interdisciplinary student body of the School.

Applicants for this position must have a doctoral degree relevant for the position, or expect to have this degree by the start of employment, in law (comparative, international) or politics (political science, political philosophy, international relations) and demonstrate strong engagement with fundamental rights from interdisciplinary perspectives. An early career candidate will be appointed as tenure-track Assistant Professor with a six-year clock. A more advanced candidate would initially be on a fixed contract of negotiable length prior to a tenure review. In highly exceptional circumstances, a particularly outstanding candidate may be appointed with tenure.

We expect a starting date during the academic year 2023-2024. The Hertie School recruits faculty members who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity with a strong commitment to high-quality teaching and innovative research of interest to the international scholarly community and policymakers. Candidates should enjoy working in an interdisciplinary, international environment with English as the language of instruction and operation. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach in the School’s Master, Executive, and PhD programmes, in particular the Human Rights and Global Governance stream of the Master of International Affairs.

As a private non-profit university, endowed and supported by the Hertie Foundation, the Hertie School offers an internationally competitive salary as well as a paid sabbatical after every five semesters. We provide excellent working conditions with outstanding financial and administrative support for research. The Hertie School is fully embedded in Berlin’s vibrant research landscape and has close ties to the top institutions of the European and international teaching and research community.
