Applications are invited to undertake a PhD programme, in partnership with Airbus, to address key challenges in supporting the adoption of green liquid hydrogen for aviation use. The successful candidate will be based in the G2TRC research group within the faculty of Engineering and will be part of a supportive team of 50 researchers, technicians, support staff and academics.

In order for liquid hydrogen to be utilised as a fuel for aviation there is a need for research that allows fuel systems to be adapted for cryogenic operation. This project will generate a robust modelling approach to enable designs of fuel pipeline systems, where both liquid and vapour are present. Having a design tool that allows the fluid condition to be predicted, whilst enabling fluid temperature and pressure control approaches to be assessed, is critical to enable future designs to be evaluated. Computational Fluid Dynamic and AI approaches will be assessed, together with low order modelling approaches, to establish the best modelling approach to provide an effective modelling tool for industry.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated person with a rigorous approach to research. Applicants should have, or be expected to gain a high 2:1, preferably a 1st class honours degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related degree. A good knowledge and/or experience in fluid mechanics with a keen interest in thermodynamics/thermal management is essential, as is the ability to work well in a team. Prior experience in CFD or AI approaches for Thermofluids would be an advantage.

The successful applicant would be expected to spend part of the PhD period based in Filton Airbus and would receive supervision support and training both from the University and Airbus.

The PhD studentship will cover fees and tax free stipend of £19,000 p.a. for 4 years. Due to funding restrictions this studentship is only available to UK (home fees) citizens. The PhD position is available from 1st October 2023.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof. Carol Eastwick, carol.eastwick@nottingham.ac.uk

Interested in this studentship? Applications with a CV, cover letter and academic transcripts should be sent to Adam Morgan (staff) ezzam8@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk

Suitable applicants will be interviewed, and if successful, invited to make a formal application.
