Biochemistry Teaching Position for Fall 2023 term available at the University of Notre Dame (USA) in England.
The University of Notre Dame, a Catholic research university that ranks in the top 20 among American colleges and universities, operates an academic center in the heart of Westminster to promote intellectual exchange through conferences, seminars and events, as well as its academic program for undergraduate students.
The University of Notre Dame’s London Undergraduate Program seeks to employ an instructor to teach the following course:
Principles of Biochemistry
Contact time: 150mins per teaching week x 14 weeks.
Deliver and assess this pre-existing class, which introduces students to the fundamental building blocks for the molecules of life: proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, and gives the student information on the utilization and manipulation of these molecules by the cell emphasizing how molecular structure dictates the functional properties of these molecules. The concept of biochemical catalysis and the properties of enzymes will be introduced. Additionally, the course describes basic biochemical methods for the purification, identification and manipulation of these compounds. Main topics include: nucleic acids, amino acids, protein structure, carbohydrates, lipids and membrane structure; enzymes and cofactors; enzyme mechanism, kinetics and regulation.
This course forms part of the core curriculum for the BSc degree programme in Biochemistry and a number of related disciplines students at the University of Notre Dame, and so runs in parallel with the same courses on campus. Collaboration with the faculty members teaching the parallel course will be expected, although instructors are expected to create their own learning materials. The class is typically offered to between 45-60 students.
Requirements: A Masters degree and university teaching experience in a relevant subject area are required for this position, PhD strongly preferred. Candidates must already have the right to work in the UK.
Each class will meet twice a week, for 14 teaching weeks EITHER twice per week on Mondays and Wednesdays, OR twice per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Class meeting times are 75 minutes each meeting, totalling 150 minutes each week. In addition, instructors are expected to make themselves available for some additional office hours for their students, as well as completing all marking, class, and exam preparation.
Dates for the Fall semester 2023: 21st August to 4th December, with a break week 16th to 20th October, and exams in the period 6th to 8th December. This post is conditional on the University of Notre Dame being able to run study abroad in London in Fall 2023.
Payment for this position will be commensurate with candidate’s level of academic experience and the teaching load expected, in the range of £4,300 to £5,600 for the class.
