The School of Computing and Digital Technology is expanding its key teaching and research strategic academic area around artificial intelligence and data science by creating a number of job opportunities at a professorial level to create impact and provide thought leadership on one of the defining trends for the 2022s - the evolution of developed economies to drive digital transformation across industry sectors and society.
This will bring together big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to the next development phase of smart systems. It is the next edge in the development of the global digital economy and digital society. Artificial intelligence and Data analysis present enormous opportunities to wider sectors and application domains such as smart manufacturing, digital health, and sustainable green cities.
To realise the vision of the School of Computing and Digital Technology, we are recruiting a team of outstanding, internationally recognised research leaders, including a professor of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The successful candidate will have an exceptional research track record and will be able to work across disciplinary boundaries. They will be committed to the highest standards of Learning and teaching, research culture, including research integrity, and creating an inclusive research environment. They will also have international research networks and excellent links with businesses.

Our academic staff are eligible to enrol in the Teachers’ Pension, a Defined Benefit scheme that includes guaranteed benefits for life, including the option of a tax-free lump sum at retirement and life cover of three times your salary. We recognise the value a great pension can have for our employees, and we make a 23.68% employer contribution. Your personal monthly contributions will vary between 7.4% and 11.7%, depending on your salary. We also give all staff a 32-day annual leave allowance, in addition the 8 public and bank holiday days.
WORKING AND LIVING IN BIRMINGHAM
The youngest city in Europe with under-25s accounting for nearly 40% of the population, Birmingham is a city full of energy and enthusiasm and is a great place to live and work.
Based in the heart of England, the city is easily accessible by road, rail and air. Birmingham New Street station has recently undergone major redevelopment, while the city is at the heart of the high-speed rail network, HS2. HS2 will provide new rapid rail travel connecting Birmingham City Centre to London and the rest of the network from the new Curzon Street Station – adjacent to Birmingham City University’s City Centre Campus – and will be one of the most environmentally friendly stations in the world.
The city’s appetite for progression is boundless, and it has been championing innovation since the earliest days of the Industrial Revolution, reflected in Birmingham City University’s new STEAMhouse building which opened in October 2022 and is home to an inter-disciplinary community of entrepreneurs, businesses, academic researchers, and students offering a wealth of support to companies of all sizes to boost growth through innovation to address commercial and societal challenges.
Birmingham is brimming with great theatres, museums, the world-famous Birmingham City University Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, as well as beautiful historical buildings and the iconic Library of Birmingham. It also has amazing concert and sporting venues including Edgbaston Cricket ground, which Birmingham City University has a long-standing partnership with. It is also home to the Alexander Stadium, which is the stunning new home for Birmingham City University’s sport courses. The city also provides a great place to shop, being home the Bullring and Grand Central, the luxurious Mailbox Birmingham and the world-famous home of British bling - the Jewellery Quarter, which is home to Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery.
