Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Urban Design in the Department of Urban Planning and Design (Ref. 519633), to commence from August 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.
The Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) is an internationally leading planning school with excellence in teaching and research in urban studies, urban planning and urban science. Its vision is to offer leadership in intellectual and methodological developments in the field, as well as making high-level impacts on urban planning, management and policy developments in Hong Kong, Mainland China, the Belt and Road Region and further afield. The DUPAD has over 40 years’ history of blending urban science, urban studies, planning, design and policy analytics and has one of the strongest groups of urban data scientists in the world. It is also active in interdisciplinary research, with strong links with geography, public health, real-estate and urban economics, transport, architecture, social sciences and environmental science groups in HKU and other universities.
Moving beyond its 40th anniversary, the Department is one of the most well-established and globally respected urban research centres in the Asia-Pacific region. It offers a range of taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and M.Phil./Ph.D. research programmes in urban studies, urban planning, urban design, urban analytics, housing management, transport. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Urban Design and Planning or a related field, commensurate with the expectation of an Associate Professor/Assistant Professor record in Urban Design practice/research and teaching, with local or international experience. Applicants with membership, or eligibility for membership of professional urban design or urban planning institutes, and knowledge of big data, advanced urban design analytical and generative research techniques applicable to urban design are desirable.
The appointee is expected to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and strong interest and ability to develop and teach courses of a master's degree programme in urban design, which include, but are not limited to, urban morphologies and urban design theories, urban economics and the values of urban design, parametric urban design studios and urban analytics workshops; and be able to contribute to curriculum development and programme administration effectively. He/She is also expected to contribute significantly to the further development of the urban design area of the Department including, but not limited to, participation in impactful research and/or knowledge exchange, and attraction of research funding. Applicants will be considered for appointment as Associate Professor/Assistant Professor based on experience.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
