E.H Boundy PhD Studentship, Theology & Religion

This PhD studentship, funded by the bequest of the late E.H. Boundy, is available to support any excellent project that falls within the research areas covered by Theology and Religion staff within the Department of Classics, Ancient History, Religion & Theology: biblical studies, early Judaism and early Christianity, post-Holocaust Jewish studies, systematic and constructive theology, in eastern as well as western traditions, sociology or anthropology of religion, eastern and oriental Christianities, ethics and public theology, philosophy of religion, and religion and sacrality in contemporary secular societies.

The successful candidate will pursue a PhD research project with supervision within the Department, and will have the opportunity to apply for departmental teaching. Duration and value of award

The studentship will be for a period of up to 3 years (36 months), dependent on satisfactory progress, and will cover full tuition fees and an annual maintenance grant of £17,668 (2022/23 rate).

Entry requirements

Successful applicants should normally have a good first degree (at least a 2:1 Honours degree, or international equivalent), in theology and religion, or in an area closely related to that of your proposed research (e.g., biblical studies, ancient languages, archaeology) and have obtained , or are currently working towards a Master’s degree at Merit level, or international equivalent, in theology and religion, or in an area closely related to that of your proposed research (e.g., biblical studies, ancient languages, archaeology).

Specific experience and competence will depend on your proposed research project.

Please note that this studentship is only open to applicants who will start their studies in September 2023 not those who have already started.

Applications for full-time or part-time study are welcome however applications will only be supported for campus-based study as this studentship is not available for distance-learning.

  1. UK only. This studentship, including full tuition fees and maintenance allowance, is available to UK candidates.
  2. No international eligibility. Candidates who are classed as international for tuition fee purposes are not eligible for this studentship.
