Faculty Registrar, Assessment Lead, Student Support Lead, Quality Lead, Equality and Diversity Lead, Biomedical Units and Deputy Unit Leads.

PURPOSE OF JOB 

The post-holder will join a team responsible for the teaching and assessment of basic and applied biomedical sciences in an undergraduate medical course. They will join a team of academic staff responsible for delivery of a number of units of the curriculum, acting as the point of contact on campus for that unit. They will be expected to create and evaluate assessment items and become involved in student support as a Personal Tutor.

Working as a deputy to their assigned unit leads, the post-holder will have responsibility for ensuring compliance with the standards and to ensure responsibility for operational delivery at the Buckingham campus of the Phase 1 curriculum, including the coordination of the academic team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

It is expected that the full-time basic science lecturer will:

  • act as the main point of contact for unit specific academic delivery in Phase 1 on the base campus
  • deputise two to three units in Phase 1 of the medical course
  • contribute to the teaching of student selected components
  • contribute to the delivery of lectures in a range of other units, up to a typical total lecture contribution of approximately 45 lectures per annum
  • contribute to item writing, standard setting and marking of assessments with 0.2 WTE allocated to this task for all lecturers in the medical school
  • contribute to admissions events for the Medical School
  • act as a personal tutor to one group of up to ten students in each of the two years of Phase 1
  • engage in appropriate educational scholarship and personal development to develop and maintain their expertise as a medical educator

 The specific responsibilities of deputy unit leads are to:

  • ensure that the unit, as described in the course documentation, is delivered effectively to students on your base campus
  • coordinate with the unit lead to produce relevant curriculum materials in a timely fashion
  • liaise with appropriate curriculum management structures to ensure that clinical educators are available to facilitate small group work during the unit
  • act as a small group facilitator when required
  • liaise with other unit leads to ensure coordination and integration of curriculum delivery
  • report to Student Support any student obviously experiencing problems during the unit
  • actively seek to enhance student learning through innovation and continuous improvement, with proposals being presented to the Phase 1 operational group

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

A doctoral degree in a subject related to medical science (for example anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics etc).

Some experience of teaching medical students or health professionals.

Good team working and communication skills (written and verbal).

A commitment to developing as a medical educator across a range of subject areas (with appropriate training) 

Desirable:

  • experience of setting and marking assessments of various types
  • experience of lecturing asynchronously and cross-site, including proficient use of collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
  • membership of a relevant professional body (i.e. Advance HE, the Academy of Medical Educators)
