Chief Student Officer

University of East London

The University of East London is one of the most diverse and vibrant universities in the global capital. Our pioneering and forward-thinking vision is making a positive and significant impact to the communities we serve, inspiring both our staff and students to reach their full potential.

We are looking for forward-thinking, innovative, curious, high-energy, self-aware people who are passionate about making a positive difference and who will thrive in an inclusive and diverse University community who are always moving forwards.

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor & President, the Chief Student Officer (CSO) provides strategic and operational leadership to student-facing university services and plays a key leadership role in ensuring that a seamless student journey and outstanding student experience sit at the heart of all university activities. The precise reporting lines for the role are currently under review as part of establishing this new role at the University.

The existing role, PVC E&E /COO is being split into two, the PVC Education & Experience and the CSO, to enable greater focus on key elements of both areas.

The CSO leads several specialist functions across the Directorate and will be expected to design, implement and deliver student services that embrace digital technology, financial sustainability, partnerships with internal and external stakeholders (including the Students’ Union), and the most innovative styles of service delivery.

We are seeking a proven leader with a demonstrable track record of achieving positive sustainable transformations within a higher education context.

The successful candidate will bring student-facing teams together to create a cohesive, cross-functional group to transform our services and provide a seamless outstanding applicant-student-graduate experience.

The CSO role has significant budgetary responsibility and line management of several sizeable teams of staff.  The work of the post holder will be a significant contributor to the University’s overall financial, reputational and strategic success. The CSO occupies a highly visible and strategically important role, so will exert their influence in all aspects of university life.

As one of the most socially inclusive and international Universities and comprising one of the most diverse staff populations in the UK (50% of our professoriate identify from black or minority ethnic backgrounds), we are hugely proud of our track record in reducing inequalities (ranked 1st in the UK & 2nd globally, Times Higher Education Global Impact Rankings, 2020) and our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of Vision 2028.
