You will play a key role in MRC’s Policy and Governance team supporting the Director of Policy, Ethics and Governance and Head of Programme in developing and delivering MRC strategic direction, policies and guidance related to research governance and good research practice, and their implementation. You will also provide pro-active support for MRC Executive Board.

This is an exciting opportunity to:

  • undertake policy and project work in the pursuit of MRC and UKRI strategic objectives, ensuring senior managers are kept abreast of policy developments and changes to national policy and legislation
  • coordinate engagement with external and internal stakeholders on research policy relating to biomedical, life sciences and health research to ensure the MRC/UKRI can influence when necessary
  • support the MRC in influencing the strategic direction of policies and guidance relating to good research practice and good governance to reflect MRC’s mission and the needs of the biomedical research community
  • develop excellent relationships throughout MRC and UKRI, working collaboratively across functions, with a comprehensive understanding of how the Policy, Ethics and Governance Directorate contributes to MRC’s objectives
  • support the MRC in delivering good governance and decision making, ensuring high level decisions at MRC are taken within corporate governance frameworks and that these are appropriately planned, informed, recorded and monitored.

Person requirements

Criteria marked with an asterisk (*) will be used to shortlist applications.

  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent in an area of science relevant to the MRC, science policy or science communication *
  • Experience of working in research policy, research management, or a research environment with relevance to the MRC remit *
  • Knowledge of key policy issues relevant to biomedical research and funding *
  • Ability to manage and support high level meetings that cover complex decision *
  • Experience of working with external stakeholders and achieving results through a range of people across various levels of seniority*
  • Strategic and pragmatic thinker, with the ability to identify key issues, analyse and clearly present essential information, and propose solutions to varied and complex problems
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal); works well as part of a dynamic team; ability to effectively network with and influence stakeholders from a diverse range of roles and levels of seniority.
  • Confident at working from first principles - exercising judgement and discretion
  • Highly developed planning and organisational skills and able to work under pressure managing conflicting priorities and time effectively
  • Ability to respond flexibly and positively to unexpected changes or demands
