In­ house early-stage spin-out companies also benefit from access to accelerate their development. To best manage our core facilities, many of our major technology platforms have been incorporated into a Centre for Advanced Scientific Technologies. CAST is run by dedicated staff who ensure equipment is properly specified, operated and maintained. They contribute to experimental design and coordinate PhD student and postdoc tra! ining. Ou r scientific facilities are subject to external reviews allowing critical evaluation that assists in sustaining excellence.

Details of our facilities are at www.dundee.ac.uk/life-sciences/facilities and include the National Phenotypic Screening Centre (NPSC), the FingerPrints Proteomics Facility, X-Ray Crystallography, a Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Facilit! y, the Dundee Imaging Facility, a Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Facility, a Data Analysis Group (DAG) and Cryo-Electron Microscopy. The role will initial ly concentrate on securing work for the FingerPrints Proteomics Facility, Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Facility, Data Analysis group (DAG) and the Dundee Imaging Facility from sources outside of the University, including other universities and industry. This work will fill spare capacity in the facilities and so secure income to fund the next generation of equipment. This role is central to delivering that through developing an awareness of the facilities capabilities, identifying external organisations that require such capabilities and then selling facility capacity to those organisations. Both new and repeat business will be important.

Your priorities will include:

  • Work with the School's mass spectrometry, stem cell, DAG and imaging facilities to identify scientific capabilities and then work with national and international organisations (customers) across the life sciences sector to sell spare capacity within the facilities to those organisations.
  • Ensure the customers' needs are met by the facility in a timely manner.
  • Establish agreed turnaround times for service delivery.
  • Work with customers to secure repeat business.
  • Produce materials, including scientific technical details, to effectively market capabilities.
  • Implement and lead change projects to secure improvements to services and ensure value for money.
  • Implement pricing and external charging systems for technical services to maximise cost-recovery.
  • Achieve a threefold increase in external income for mass spectrometry within 36 months.

Who we're looking for:

  • Educated to first degree level, preferably in life sciences or a closely related field.
  • Strong understanding of mass spectrometry.
  • Proven ability to generate new and continuing business for a science-based organisation, creating and closing opportunities.
  • Significant experience of service delivery, including growth/expansion.
  • Proven ability to create a strategic vision and organisational strategy development.
  • Experience in managing projects, preferable within an academic environment.
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills supported by good IT skills.
  • Extremely good interpersonal, motivational, networking and influencing skills.
