Are you an outstanding early-career researcher with a passion for engineering? Would you like to establish an independent research group at a world-leading university? If so, Queen’s University Belfast has the perfect career opportunity for you!
We are looking for enthusiastic external candidates for the 2023/24 Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship scheme and welcome applicants from across the UK and beyond. Please note that this is not directly a job opportunity, but rather the opportunity to apply for external funding with Queen’s as your host institution. Candidates who are successful in securing funding from RAEng will be employed at Queen’s University Belfast for the 5-year duration of the fellowship, with the potential for a permanent academic position at Queen’s upon successful completion of the fellowship.
What does the scheme offer?
The RAEng Research Fellowship scheme offers up to £625,000 of financial support over 5 years, to support the Fellow’s salary, plus justified research and training costs. Please note however that Research Fellowships may be held on a part-time basis (minimum 50% FTE). In addition, you will gain membership to the RAEng’s network of Fellows, and Queen’s Fellowship Academy, granting exclusive access to mentoring support, networking and training opportunities.
Applicants must wish to pursue an ambitious, original programme of engineering research and impact, with a strong focus on STEM advocacy and ambassadorship. Applications are particularly sought from candidates whose research aligns with the strategy of the Belfast Region City Deal, a £1BN investment that aims to transform Northern Ireland’s engineering offering in key growth sectors, including:
All nationalities and ages are welcome and applications from underrepresented groups in engineering are strongly encouraged (women; Black people, including those with any mixed ethnicity with Black ethnic background; or people with disabilities).
Timelines and how to apply
Each year, host applications are limited, so the internal selection of candidates is being managed by the Research Development team on behalf of the University. Queen’s is capped at four applications, and at least two of the four applications will be submitted by candidates from the above identified underrepresented groups, whose proposals meet the required merit criteria.
The timeline for applications is as follows:
QUB internal deadline: Friday 5th May 2023
Candidates notified of outcome: Expected early-to-mid June 2023
RAEng full application deadline: Expected mid-September 2023
Prospective applicants should email the Research Development Team directly for the application form. Before contacting the team, please carefully consult the eligibility criteria to ensure you are eligible to apply.
