Glasgow Caledonian University - Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health

Location: Glasgow
Salary: £45,737 to £52,841
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 17th March 2023
Closes: 14th April 2023
Job Ref: R3726

The Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health seeks to recruit a health economist to extend and enhance the Centre’s research and teaching activities. The successful candidate will join the Economics of Health and Wellbeing theme (https://www.gcu.ac.uk/yunuscentre/research/economicsofhealthandwellbeing/) and will contribute to world-leading health economics research along with some health economics teaching at a postgraduate level.

We encourage applications from candidates with research interests across our themes, particularly economic evaluations of health and social care interventions, evaluation of complex community-based initiatives, preference elicitation and societal values.

The Yunus Centre for Social Business & Health was founded in 2010 and is named in honour of Professor Muhammad Yunus, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to advance social and economic opportunities of the poor through work on microcredit.  The Centre is multi-disciplinary and comprises 19 academic and research staff and 14 PhD students based in the Centre, as well as affiliated members from across GCU’s Schools.  We are co-located at the heart of our Glasgow campus, and enjoy a vibrant and supportive research culture in the Centre, where research excellence is central and research careers are supported.  The research performance of the Centre demonstrates research excellence across all standard research metrics, including grant successes (from UKRI, NIHR, Wellcome Trust, Community Fund), high quality publications and research impact.  All of our staff contributed to REF 2021, across Units of Assessment, in health, business and management and social work and social policy.  In the health field, (UoA3 Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy) 91% of the GCU’s health research was formally classified as world leading or internationally excellent (REF2021).

Our research cuts across the three main societal challenges listed in Glasgow Caledonian’s University’s Research strategy: inclusive societies, healthy lives and sustainable environments.  Focusing on social innovation, health, wellbeing and inequalities, we aim to transform the lives of communities through pioneering research in the following areas:

  • Social economy
  • Economics of health and wellbeing
  • Community development, citizenship and participation

We expect the candidate to hold a good degree in economics, a related quantitative subject, or a relevant health-related degree and a postgraduate qualification with substantial health economics components. The candidate will preferably already have a PhD and will be able to show evidence of excellence in research.  Experience of teaching is an advantage but opportunities for training and development will be provided.

As a member of the Economics of Health and Wellbeing Group and the Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health you will have opportunity to grow research collaborations at GCU and beyond; advance your skills, knowledge and experience; as well as develop the next generation of public health policymakers. GCU offers many opportunities for continuous professional development of researchers and teachers alike

Please note that the appointment will be made on the first point of the salary scale (unless by exception).
