Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global and Civic Engagement)

University of Sussex

The University of Sussex has set out to be different from the start: challenging convention, fostering critical thinking, and – rooted in interdisciplinarity – seeking to disrupt traditions and redraw the map of learning. Now in our 61st year, we have grown to more than 18,500 students, and have established a global reputation, with more than 89 per cent of our research recognised as world leading or internationally recognised in REF2021. We host students from over 130 countries, rank 8th in the world for student mobility by WURI and were awarded the title of University of Sanctuary on recognition of our work supporting forced migrants. We are also a university rooted in place, with strong connections to local communities, making a significant contribution to local economic development and social innovation. Our ‘Spirit of Sussex Awards’ have been a cornerstone of supporting students to engage civically and are committed to knowledge exchange, supporting enterprising students, and engaging in research that contributes to our region and environment. Our ‘Engage for Change’ strategy places a strong emphasis on Sussex as an engaged university – interacting purposefully with people, organisations and communities at a local, regional, national and international level.

We are now looking to appoint a Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global and Civic and Engagement). This new role will provide leadership for and continue to shape ‘Engage for Change’, bringing together and developing the global and civic engagement work carried out across the University and providing greater coherence to maximise its impact. The appointee will build and leverage local and global partnerships to enhance our standing, oversee the delivery of academic and commercial opportunities, develop our international student recruitment, and enhance opportunities for students to gain global experiences and to contribute to local communities as part of their studies.

Strong candidates for the role will bring a deep understanding of the international higher education landscape and familiarity with national and regional priorities and agendas, with a track record of success in the development and implementation of engagement strategies. With a high level of academic and professional credibility, they will be outstanding communicators, relationship-builders, and compelling ambassadors for Sussex with a wide range of stakeholders. Candidates will need to bring creative and strategic thinking to the role. They will work with agility and collaboratively, and will embrace Sussex’s values and commitment to being an inclusive and welcoming university in which diversity of background, belief, thought, and identity flourishes.
