European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) - Phenomics Team

About the team/job

We are seeking an enthusiastic web developer to join the IMPC project, as part of the Phenomics Team. We are an international team of developers and bioinformaticians.

The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) is a G7-recognised global research infrastructure that coordinates the production and phenotyping of thousands of new mutant mouse strains to better understand human health. Over the last 10 years the consortium has identified over 99,148 phenotypes linked to 8,368 genes analysed in our latest data release, uncovering genes that have a role in deafness, diabetes, and several rare diseases.

Your role

This opportunity will enable you to apply your skills to the development of several public websites that play a crucial role in research of human genetic diseases and aging. We’re looking for somebody who cares deeply about the experience of those using the websites. 

You will:

  • work to extend existing web interfaces supporting both the research community and the mouse production facilities
  • be involved in a major project to build a new interface to replace some of our existing web infrastructure
  • use an API that is being developed to optimise the delivery of complex data to improve web page performance

You will need to develop a strong collaboration with members of the team delivering the IMPC API services and external stakeholders and users of the websites. 

You have

  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript/Typescript frameworks (such as Angular, or React)
  • Skilled in HTML5 and CSS
  • Interest in data visualisation (Highcharts, D3, Canvas, SVG)
  • Good knowledge of UX practices
  • Well-versed in UI and responsive design and have a creative streak
  • Experience working with APIs (REST or GraphQL)
  • Familiar with version control (such as Git, GitHub)
  • Good communication skills and decision-making skills
  • Ability to prioritise work
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to articulate solutions, ideas, and recommendations
  • Comfortable producing documentation and tutorials (user and technical) 

You might also have

  • Experience with:
    • JavaScript unit testing frameworks
    • user engagement and website promotion (Twitter, Mastodon)
    • Google Analytics
    • relational (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB) databases
  • Knowledge of:
    • Search Engine Optimization
    • website security best practices
  • Some knowledge of bioinformatics / biology / genetics
  • Prior experience working in a multidisciplinary scientific environment.

  • Contract duration: This position is a 3 year fixed-term contract, project-limited.
