The High-Energy Physics group at the Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics, welcomes applications for the position of Research Laboratory Technician, to support their work on ATLAS, one of the main experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. 

As part of a dedicated and friendly team, the successful candidate will be working on quality control of silicon particle detectors and the production of 1000 detector modules and the delivery of these within both UK-wide and international collaborations. 

We are seeking a technician with affinity for both mechanics and electronics, qualified to HND/HNC, level 4/5 vocational qualifications or an equivalent level of practical experience.

Prior experience with fine mechanics assembly work and practical experience with either electronic measurements or the operation of custom electronics setups are requirements, and practical experience with micro electronics assembly techniques would be highly valued. 

You will have good communication skills, be computer literate, have an eye for detail and show initiative to improve procedures and processes. 

Main duties & responsibilities:

  • To carry out detailed measurements on sensitive Silicon detectors, including: visual inspection, electrical measurements, mechanical measurements using dedicated instruments and setups.
  • To carry out module assembly work: precision assembly of delicate electronic components and assemblies, including wirebonding using our full automatic machine.
  • To run all the measurements and testing required for module quality control.
  • Update test records and result entry.
  • Keep track of components and stock, arrange shipping of completed objects to UK institutes.
  • Ensure smooth running of our cleanroom facility.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
