COLLEGE LECTURESHIP AND FELLOWSHIP IN PURE MATHEMATICS

University of Cambridge

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £32,348 to £36,386 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 22nd March 2023
Closes: 28th April 2023

Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for a College Lectureship in Pure Mathematics, associated with a Fellowship of Christ’s College.

The Lectureship will be tenable from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2026 initially or for a similar period with dates to be agreed. The Lectureship is a renewable (permanent) post. The postholder will have their first formal appraisal during their third year, potentially resulting in renewal for a further two years. The postholder will have their second formal appraisal at the start of the fifth year, which is the final year of the probationary period. Successful second appraisal will result in completion of the probationary period and renewal until the retirement age.

The successful candidate will be expected to reside in Cambridge and will be elected to a Fellowship of the College. They will be expected to undertake at least eight hours of small-group teaching per week for the College during Full Term (equivalent to 160 hours per academic year), to engage in research and publication, to assist or act as Director of Studies in Mathematics from time to time, and to undertake other College offices or duties appropriate to the appointment if asked to do so. Candidates should normally be able to teach a range of subjects from the pure mathematical material covered in the first two years of the Mathematical Tripos at the University of Cambridge. The Fellow may, at their discretion, give additional College teaching (beyond 160 hours per annum) which would be remunerated at the normal hourly rates for College supervision.

The stipend is currently undergoing review, but will be in the region covered by points 39 to 43 of the Cambridge University scale (presently £32,348 to £36,386). The Fellow will be a member of the College’s Governing Body and will be expected to sit on a number of College committees. The privileges of a Fellowship include seven free meals per week, the possibility of limited financial support for research expenses, a study room for teaching and other academic purposes, and possibly single-occupancy residential accommodation in College. The stipend is subject to a reduction if the Fellow chooses to reside in College.

Letters of application (there are no forms) should be sent to the HR Manager, Christ’s College, Cambridge CB2 3BU (email jobs@christs.cam.ac.uk) to arrive no later than noon on Friday 28 April 2023, including a curriculum vitae with details of qualifications, publications and experience; an indication of whether a work visa would be required in order to take up the post; and the names and addresses of two persons who have agreed to act as academic referees. Candidates must arrange for their referees to write directly to the HR Manager so that references are received by the closing date of Friday 28 April 2023. Short-listed candidates may be invited for interviews expected to be held on and around Monday 15 May 2023.
