Lancaster University College at Beijing Jiao Tong University

Full time English and Study Skills Tutor/s – to commence from August 2023

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Lancaster University and Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) joint institute in China. The campus and neighbouring community are situated in the ‘Weihai Nanhai New Area’ along the Southern coastline of the Shandong peninsula, which is an area with a fast-growing reputation for clean air, golden beaches and ecological parkland. The campus is served by an adjacent bus station, as well as – opening in 2023 - a high speed railway station connecting Nanhai to Qingdao. Weihai airport, which connects domestically and internationally, is less than an hour away.

Following a period of probation, the successful applicant will be employed on an indefinite contract and be based on the campus in China for two semesters, each of 18 weeks in duration.  Accommodation is provided in China, including all utilities, BUPA medical cover and two return flights included in the remuneration package.

The individual appointed will have the opportunity to teach on our English and Study Skills modules, which is part of a four-year degree programme for Chinese students, leading to a dual award from both institutions in one of six degree programmes in the following areas: Computing, Art & Design, Communications Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Accounting & Finance and Business Studies.

This role entails delivering student-centred classes incorporating opportunities for developing independent learning skills; creating supplementary relevant teaching materials, providing learner support; evaluating learning through a range of assessment methods, and keeping up-to-date records as required by Lancaster University. Teaching will be conducted face-to-face in China but on-line or a blended approaches may be adopted at times owing to unforeseen circumstances.

Applicants should have TESOL/CELTA qualifications with recent experience of teaching English for Academic Purposes in a variety of international settings. Post graduate teaching qualifications (MA TESOL/ or DELTA) are highly desirable. Candidates will be expected to have tutorial experience, working in both large and small group settings.

Experience of teaching international students, ideally Chinese students, plus proficiency in the use of interactive technologies is essential. Successful candidates must be available to commence in the role by August 2023 and this role is subject to being able to obtain a relevant working visa prior to the first deployment to China.

The modules to be covered are taught for up to 18 hours per week with additional tutorial hours.
