We create active educational experiences that expand minds, foster cultural intelligence and open up exciting future opportunities. We are a values-driven community, invested in making a difference. FIE London is currently seeking to contract a qualified, enthusiastic, and confident sessional instructor to teach the undergraduate urban sustainability social science course Contemporary British Broadcasting in the 2023 Summer term.
The ideal instructor will have a relevant postgraduate degree, doctorate preferred, in a directly related field and have experience of teaching at the undergraduate level. Experience teaching American undergraduates at a range of levels is preferred as FIE classes are delivered to undergraduates from a variety of institutions, predominantly American universities. Faculty are responsible for all aspects of course preparation, teaching, and assessment.
FIE’s courses are designed so that students can actively participate in their host country’s culture. All courses are supported by co-curricular activities (field trips, site visits, guest speakers, interactive experiences) that foster community connection and understanding. By discovering and experiencing knowledge beyond the classroom students shape their own perspective of the world. Anyone who teaches for us must be willing and eager to use the location of London in creative ways, incorporating experiential components as part of their teaching delivery strategy.
This course explores the world of Contemporary British Broadcasting. Built on the ethos that broadcasting must exist not only to entertain the public but also to inform and educate, British radio and television remains a lively mix of genres and programmes with extensive influence throughout the world. With complementary references to relevant historical and current developments in American broadcasting, this course looks at how the license-fee funded BBC strives to maintain its supremacy in the British broadcasting landscape amidst other major players such as Channel 4, ITV, and BSkyB.
This course emphasises how Britain's public service broadcasting foundations have paved the way for the rapid evolution of the factual genre and an independent production community that leads the world in exporting reality formats. With insight from guest speakers and industry field trips, students delve behind the scenes to understand how programmes get commissioned and made. They also explore the challenges of programming across platforms and how British broadcasters are adapting to the rapidly changing digital landscape. Full syllabus is here.
