About the role

The Sensational Museum (https://sensationalmuseum.org/) is an interdisciplinary, multi-institution project that aims to rethink the role and place of the senses in the museum. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council the project will help museums to create inclusive interventions accessible to everyone. The research aims (ambitiously and audaciously) not only to articulate what such 'trans-sensory' thinking and practices might be, but to demonstrate and test this approach within the context of real-world museum collection and communication - robustly evidencing its value for practitioners, policymakers and standards agencies.

Working within an interdisciplinary team, the researcher will help to bring together insights and methods from museum studies, critical disability studies, psychology and design. They will embrace a co-creation, inclusive methodology where disabled and non-disabled stakeholders are involved in every phase of research design and delivery.

The researcher will work within one of the two main ‘Strands’ of the project. Strand A (‘Collection’), based at the University of Leicester, and led by Professor Ross Parry, is partnering with The Collections Trust and The Museum Platform. The Strand asks: what ways museums’ collection and documentation policies and practices perpetuate ableist ways of thinking about objects, and ableist ways of communicating the narratives surrounding those objects; and how a radical rethinking of the role of the senses in the museum can change museum people’s experiences of working with objects, data, and documentation. The Strand’s key outputs will be a new accessible interface and data model for trans-sensory documentation work inside the museum.
