Job Summary
We are seeking a post-doctoral research fellow to join the group of Prof Alan McNally. The post holder will work on a recently awarded NIHR funded Biomedical Research Centre theme focussed on Infections and Acute Care. The post holder will lead the creation of a laboratory dedicated to creating metagenomic based diagnostics for microbial and viral infections. The purpose of the project is to use primarily the GridIon sequencing platform (and to a lesser extent Illumina sequencing technology) to create sample to result pipelines allowing is to use metagenomic sequencing to identify pathogens in a wide range of clinical sample types including high and low biomass samples. There will also be opportunity to do pathogen genome surveillance research on respiratory and AMR pathogens. The medium-term aim is to translate this culture free, pathogen agnostic diagnostic approach into our partner UHB Hospital trust, and the post-holder will be part of a very large collaborative network involving the renowned microbiology and genomic academics in IMI, as well as clinical microbiologists and acute care and intensive care clinicians.
The successful applicant will be passionate about translating genomic and metagenomic technologies into microbial diagnostics. They will have a higher degree in Microbiology, Infectious diseases and/or genomics/bioinformatics with experience of performing library construction and sequencing on ONT platforms highly desirable for the role. Experience of microbial genome sequence and/or metagenomic data analysis is also desirable for the role.
