EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is looking for a Communications Officer to cover a period of maternity leave. This is a rare chance to join a high performing and close knit Communications team. We work closely with leadership, staff and international collaborators to deliver high-quality, engaging content for internal and external audiences.  

This role offers scope for you to be involved in a wide range of projects. You’ll need to be able to work independently, proposing and initiating projects and seeing them through from inception to completion in an open and transparent manner. Crucially, your flexibility will help you adapt to shifting priorities in a busy office, where no two days are alike. 

Your role

There are some big projects coming up that you will help to ensure are successful, including supporting the delivery of a new intranet for EMBL-EBI, taking our internal communications to the next level, and developing and implementing campaigns to help build a sense of community amongst our staff and students.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the development of internal comms processes and campaigns
  • Managing the production and dissemination of EMBL-EBI’s digital newsletters, optimising them for efficient delivery and readability
  • Supporting storyboarding and video production
  • Designing and executing communications campaigns
  • Procuring and stock control of corporate merchandise
  • Writing and developing engaging content for our internal and external channels (website, newsletters, social media, intranet). 

You have

  • Educated to degree level or relevant working experience
  • Ideally 3-5 years experience in a communication role
  • Excellent written verbal and visual communication skills.
  • Ability to engage with subject matter experts
  • Communication with internal and external stakeholders is essential, therefore strong communication skills both verbal and non-verb
  • Well organised with the ability to work alone and to deadlines  

You might also have

  • An interest in science/ Bioinformatics 
  • Experience working in an international environment

What else you need to know

  • Contract Type: Supernumerary - This contract type will be required to pay class 3 National Insurance Contributions of £15.85 a week
  • Contract Duration: This position is a 9-12 month absence cover, based on the candidates availability. We are also open to applications for a minimum of 31-39 hours per week.
