This is a four-year (1+3 MRes/PhD) studentship funded through the Cambridge EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Resilience in a Changing World (FIBE2 CDT). The FIBE2 CDT aims to develop the next generation of infrastructure professionals who can create, shape and deliver the national vision for UK infrastructure, who will be equipped with a versatile and cross-disciplinary skill set to meet the most complex emerging challenges and contribute effectively to better infrastructure decision-making in the UK. This full-time project is funded in collaboration with Ordnance Survey, geospatial experts who create, maintain and distribute detailed location information for Great Britain.
Within the built environment, a digital twin is a realistic digital representation of assets, processes, and systems. An ecosystem of connected digital twins which can enable system optimisation and planning across sectors and organisations (CDBB, 2020). All the benefits promised by this technology rely on the ability of digital twins to evolve and be future-proofed. The infrastructure sector and in particular roads will have to solve a multitude of challenges posed by eg. autonomous driving, smart materials and climate change.
The research aims to provide the needed geospatial reference model for digital twins enhancing reality capture, 3D reconstruction, asset certainty, and overall spatial context and understanding via integration with existing national data holdings. The reference model must be able to ensure that digital twins can integrate with existing software while offering a flexible enough approach safeguarding backwards compatibility in the future. This project can significantly strengthen the level of maturity (complexity and connectedness) of digital twins enabling the next generation of smart applications, such as performance optimisation by real-time data capture, failure prediction and future scenario modelling.
