Job description

Applications are invited for a Professor in Applied Mathematics or Statistics in the Department of Mathematics at King's College London. Candidates are expected to have research expertise in some area of Econophysics, Financial Mathematics, Mathematical Data Science, Operations Research, Optimization or Statistics, with the potential for impact beyond the mathematical sciences, to bolster the department’s research strength and impact and provide research leadership within the department. Candidates should have the potential to carry out research that has high levels of originality, innovation and depth that can lead to significant impact on their field and more widely.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a research record of international stature in and to contribute to the long-term research vision of the Department. They will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching. 

Detailed duties will be allocated by the Head of Department.

The post is available from September 2023 and is located at the Strand Campus of King’s College London.

This is a full-time post -100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Take on a leadership role in research, teaching and administration within the Department of Mathematics
  • Enhance the research profile of the Department, through maintaining a consistent high-level output of publications and presentations of world-class quality.
  • Sustain high-quality research activity through a portfolio of individual, joint and/or network research projects, and to acquire funding for the same through grant applications to funding bodies.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for research impact beyond academia, both for their own research and for that of junior colleagues.
  • Supervise and train postgraduate students and postdoctoral research staff to ensure their effective development.
  • Act in a senior role within the Department in administrative and other activities as directed by the Head of Department, including mentoring of junior staff, in accordance with the departmental programme and workload model.
  • Take part in strategic planning and decision-making at Department, Faculty and University level.
  • Promote and market the work of the Department in the subject, both nationally and internationally
  • Contribute to national and international research council activities and similar panels as appropriate.
  • Lead and co-ordinate research activity in their subject.
  • Lead research and collaborative partnerships with other educational institutions and bodies.
  • Provide advice to external bodies, as appropriate.
