15 full PhD Scholarships on offer in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Dublin City University, four of which are on the interdisciplinary dimensions of AI and Society.

About Humanities and Social Science at DCU

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Dublin City University is DCU’s largest Faculty, blending long-established subjects, such as English Literature, Applied Languages, Geography, History, Irish, Law, Music, Politics, Theology and Philosophy with newer disciplines, such as Media Studies, Translation Studies and International Relations.

DCU is now ranked in the top 200 universities in the world for ‘arts and humanities’ and in the top 250 universities for ‘social sciences’. Five of the Faculty’s individual disciplines are also ranked in the QS top 300 universities in the world – three of those in the top 200 globally. With almost 200 research students, an average of 10 monographs and 125 international peer-reviewed publications per year and an average externally generated research expenditure of over €3 million per year, the Faculty has a strong research profile of international standing.

Full fees and an annual stipend of €19,000 is on offer for four years in total.

The four interdisciplinary scholarships on offer are on specific topics and are linked with specific Schools and supervisors, as follows:

  • AI in the Fight Against Corruption: Leveraging Digital Technologies to Enhance Media Integrity and Prevent Media Capture: School of Communications and School of Law and Government
  • AI: Artistic Representations and Public Understandings: School of English and School of Communications
  • Artificial Intelligence, Disability and Society – an interdisciplinary examination of the emerging ethical, legal and regulatory issues: School of Theology, Philosophy, and Music and School of Law and Government, with a third supervisor from the School of Psychology
  • Towards a holistic approach of AI for societal good: reconciling the EU’s digital sovereignty and green transition ambitions: School of Law and Government and School of Communications

In addition to the four interdisciplinary thematic scholarships, there are 11 scholarships available across the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, School of Communications, School of English, Fiontar agus Scoil na Gaelige, School of History and Geography, School of Law and Government, School of Theology, Philosophy and Music.

Qualifications and eligibility

The applicant would normally have obtained a primary degree classification equivalent to Lower Second Class Honours or above, from an approved University or an approved equivalent degree-awarding body, or have an approved equivalent professional qualification in an area cognate to the research topics above. Non-native speakers of English will be required to provide evidence of their English language competency as part of their application.
